We have worked with Doug Brown Design since 2010 when he designed our first web site. We were so pleased with Doug's work that when we were ready to refresh our website years later, we naturally went to Doug. There was no need to evaluate anyone else. Doug is more than a business collaborator; he is a trusted partner. In his own words: "we listen and we respond." Yes, Doug does! His commitment to your project doesn't end when the deliverable is met. Doug will be there to support you after the project is completed. Recently, due to a change of web host, our web site files "disappeared." We reached out to Doug who responded to us in minutes. He has been working with our new host to restore our website to working order. That is only one example of the kind of service that Doug delivers. Without any reservations at all, we highly recommend Doug Brown for excellent and personalized service that extends well past the completion of your project.Posted on Google![]()

Great ability to comprehend a written vision and translate into energetic, on-brand designs. Quick responses and a great partner.
Hi, I’m Doug Brown
I’ve been designing websites and other creative materials for businesses since 2007. Over the years, I’ve worked on everything from small business websites and branding to digital marketing, presentations, and print materials.
I believe good design starts with understanding the business behind it. Before jumping into a project, I want to learn about your services, your customers, and what you need your website to do.
I’ll help with the design, content, and technical details, and we’ll work through the decisions together. You won’t have to manage an agency team or explain your project to several different people. You’ll work directly with me.
What goes into your website?
A good website needs to do more than look nice. It should give visitors the information they’re looking for and make it easy for them to take the next step.
Designed around your business
We’ll start by talking about your business, your customers, and what you want the website to accomplish. The design and content will be built around those needs, rather than forcing your business into a generic template.
Built with WordPress
I build websites using WordPress, which gives you a practical way to manage your content. You can update text, change images, and add pages without having to write code.
And if you’d rather have me handle updates, I can help with that, too.
Easy to use on phones and computers
People may visit your website from a phone, tablet, or computer. I’ll make sure the layout, navigation, contact information, and forms work well across different screen sizes.
SEO basics included
Your website should help people find your business when they’re searching for the services you offer. I’ll take care of important on-page SEO elements, including page titles, meta descriptions, headings, and content structure.
I’ll also consider how your content is organized so search engines and AI-powered search tools can better understand what your business does. These steps provide a solid foundation, although search rankings depend on many factors.
Website tracking
Once your website is live, it’s helpful to know whether people are finding it and what they’re doing when they arrive.
I can help set up tracking so you have a clearer picture of website traffic and inquiries. That gives you useful information when deciding what to improve next.
Room to grow
Your business may change over time, and your website can change with it. You might add a new service, start working in another part of the state, or need a new page to answer common customer questions.
I can help you make those updates as your needs change.
Website design for a range of industries
I’ve worked with businesses across North Carolina and beyond, so I’m comfortable learning about different industries and the people they serve.
Healthcare and dental
Projects include WebMD, Triangle Sleep Center, Preston Dental Loft, Invisalign, and Healthgrades.
Healthcare websites need to make important information easy to find. Visitors should be able to understand the services offered, learn about a practice, and find out how to schedule an appointment.
Construction and home services
Projects include Kitchen Recreations, Raleigh Custom Woodwork, Elston Hardwood Flooring, Aber Home Inspections, ProClean, and A-B Control Asbestos Abatement Specialists.
For contractors and home service businesses, clear service descriptions, examples of completed work, and easy-to-find contact information can help potential customers decide whether to get in touch.
Education and nonprofit
Projects include Cary Academy, NC Foundation for Soil & Water Conservation, and Food on the Move.
These websites often need to serve several audiences at once. Clear navigation and well-organized information help visitors find what they need without getting lost.
Professional services
I’ve worked with law firms, financial services companies, leadership coaches, and consultants.
For professional service businesses, a website should explain what you do, communicate your experience, and give potential clients a reason to start a conversation.
Industrial and technical
My experience also includes projects involving Cree Lighting, NASA Ames, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, and wastewater management.
When a business offers specialized products or services, the challenge is presenting detailed information in a way that’s easy to follow. I can help organize that content so visitors can find the answers they’re looking for.
Don’t see your industry?
That’s fine. You don’t need to fit into one of these categories to work with me.
We’ll talk about your business, the customers you want to reach, and what you need your website to accomplish. From there, we can work out the right approach.
Should you build your own website, hire an agency, or work with a freelance designer?
There are a few ways to get a website built, and the right choice depends on your budget, your time, and how much help you need.
Build it yourself with Wix or Squarespace
Website builders can be a good option if you’re starting a business on a tight budget and have the time to build and maintain the site yourself.
The trade-off is that you’ll be handling the design, content, setup, and updates. If you’d rather spend that time running your business, working with a designer may make more sense.
Hire a website design agency
An agency can be a good fit for a larger project that needs several specialists working together.
For a smaller business, though, you may prefer a more direct working relationship without multiple people involved in the process.
Work directly with me
When you work with me, you’ll talk directly to the person designing and building your website. I’ll learn about your business, help you work through the decisions, and keep you involved as the project progresses.
I’m a one-person business, so I take on a manageable number of projects at a time. That lets me give each project personal attention.
There’s no single right choice for every business. If you’re not sure which approach makes sense for you, we can talk through your options.
How the website design process works
I want the process to be straightforward, with clear expectations from the beginning.
We’ll talk about your project
We’ll discuss your business, your customers, and what you want your website to do. If you already have a website, we’ll look at what’s working and what could be improved.
Not sure whether you need a complete redesign? That’s okay. We can talk through that, too.
You’ll get a clear proposal and price
I’ll outline the work involved, the pages and features we discussed, and the project cost. You’ll have the price in writing before I get started.
We’ll work through the design
I’ll start with the homepage so we can agree on the overall look and feel. Once you’re comfortable with the direction, I’ll move on to the rest of the website.
I’ll build the website
I’ll build the pages, add the content, and make sure the site works across different screen sizes. You’ll have opportunities to review the work along the way.
You’ll review everything before launch
We’ll go through the finished website together and address any changes needed before it goes live.
We’ll get your website online
Once everything is approved, I’ll take care of the launch details and help make sure the essential tracking is in place.
I’ll be here after launch
Need to update a page, add a service, or make changes as your business grows? You can reach out to me for ongoing website and design support.
Need something quickly? Let me know when we talk. A focused one-page website or landing page may be possible in about a week when the content and other details are ready.
Not sure what your website needs?
You don’t have to know exactly what’s wrong with your current website before reaching out. Sometimes a few improvements are enough. Other times, a redesign makes more sense.
Here are a few things worth considering.
Can people find you when they search for your services?
Try searching Google for the services you offer along with your town or city. If your business isn’t showing up, your website and local search presence may need some attention.
Do you know where your website inquiries come from?
Tracking can help you understand how people find your website and which pages may be helping generate inquiries.
Is your website easy to use on a phone?
Your phone number should be easy to tap, your text should be readable, and your contact form should be simple to complete.
Does your website reflect your business today?
If your services have changed or your website hasn’t been updated in years, it may be time to revisit the design and content.
Are potential customers getting the information they need?
Visitors should be able to understand what you offer, who you help, and how to contact you without having to hunt for answers.
If any of these sound familiar, let’s talk. I’ll take a look at your website and give you my honest opinion about what could help.
Sometimes that means a redesign. Sometimes it’s a smaller update. And sometimes the website isn’t the main issue. I’ll help you understand the options before you decide what to do.
Frequently asked questions
How much does website design cost in North Carolina?
It depends on the size of the website and what you need it to do. A straightforward business website will have different requirements from a site with online booking, e-commerce, or other specialized features.
Once I understand your project, I’ll provide a clear price in writing before work begins. The initial conversation is free, and there’s no obligation to move forward.
Do you only work with Raleigh businesses?
No. I’m based in Raleigh, but I work with businesses throughout North Carolina and beyond.
I can meet with clients in the Triangle when it makes sense, and we can work remotely through phone calls, email, and video meetings for projects elsewhere in the state.
How long does it take to build a website?
It depends on the project. A simple landing page may be ready in about a week if the content is prepared. A larger website with more pages and features will take longer.
We’ll discuss the timeline before the project starts so you know what to expect.
Can I update my website myself?
Yes. I build websites in WordPress and can show you how to make common updates to text and images. If you’d prefer to have me take care of updates, we can discuss ongoing support.
Do I work directly with you?
Yes. I’m a freelance designer, so you’ll work directly with me from our first conversation through launch. You won’t have to coordinate with an account manager or explain your project to several different people.
What if I don’t need a complete redesign?
Then I’ll tell you. Your website may only need a few improvements, such as updated content, better navigation, or a simpler way for customers to contact you.
We’ll look at what’s working and what isn’t before deciding on the next step.
Can you work on a website someone else built?
In many cases, yes. I can review an existing WordPress website and discuss options for updates, repairs, redesigns, or ongoing maintenance.
I’ll need to look at the site and understand how it’s built before recommending an approach.
